New Initiatives at the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI - UNC): Water Science Software Institute and the National Consortium for Data Science

Abstract:

The Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at UNC – Chapel Hill seeks to develop and deploy advanced technologies to enable scientific discoveries and practical innovations. RENCI is currently leading two initiatives relevant to the ESIP community, an NSF-funded grant to conceptualize a Water Science Software Institute (http://waters2i2.org) and RENCI is leading the National Consortium for Data Science (http://data2discovery.org). This poster will highlight key elements from these efforts relevant to ESIP members.  In particular the poster will present the WSSI Open Community Engagement Process. The WSSI OCEP melds aspects of open source communities, agile development methods, and a facilitated collaborative science process supported by the NSF funded National Socio-environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC - http://www.sesync.org) with a goal to produce transformative water science.
