MODIS Web Services: Enabling Automated Access and Post-Processing of MODIS Science Data

Abstract:

The MODAPS (MODIS Adaptive Processing System) Web Services provides a machine-to-machine API to level 1 and atmospheric archived MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) data.  For years the Level 1 and Atmospheric Archive and Distribution System (LAADS) Web site has provided a user-interactive GUI for accessing select MODIS data.  Our Web Services supplements LAADS GUI and extends to Earth scientists automated tools to interrogate the MODAPS data repository, process and download data.  The MODAPS team has developed a suite of services, using industry standard technologies to provide a robust, system-independent interface to the MODAPS data and processing system. The foundation is the MODAPS Web Service, which provides access, retrieval and processing routines, as well as OpenSearch and the Open Geospatial Consortium’s Web Coverage Service (WCS) interfaces. An OGC compliance Web Coverage Service is also available, as well as a Web Map Tiled Service, currently in alpha testing. Furthermore, an Open-source Project for a Network Data Access Protocol (OPeNDAP) service has recently been staged to service data requests in this standard, HTTP protocol.
