Real Time Data Management Tools for GPM Ground Validation Field Campaigns

Abstract:

The Global Hydrology Resource Center DAAC provides collaboration and data management tools for field campaigns, including near real time data ingest, visualization and distribution.  These real time data resources help scientists adapt observation strategies in response to unfolding weather events.  Such situational awareness is particularly important for deploying airborne and other mobile instruments, and for adjusting observation parameters (e.g., requesting rapid scan mode).  This poster highlights the most recent GPM GV field campaign portal, for the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) campaign, that just ended on June 30, 2013.  In addition to tools for sharing data and information, instrument status, daily plans and weather forecasts, the portal provided map-based visualization of real-time data from operational radars, satellites, stream and rain gauges, as well as from the suite of ground instruments managed by the IFloodS team.  The portal was built on the ORION situational awareness framework developed by the University of Alabama in Huntsville's Information Technology and Systems Center (ITSC).  Future plans include mobile apps tied to the ORION Framework, to help scientists in the field with site selection, reporting, and real time data visualization.

The GHRC is a NASA Earth Science Data Center, and is a partnership between NASA MSFC's Earth Science Office and UAH ITSC.
