Documentation Cluster - October Telecon

Abstract/Agenda:

Preliminary Agenda

1) Quantifying changes between standards (Ted)

2) August action items (Ted, Kelly, Aleksandar)

3) Session at January meeting

possibly something from Ed

Notes:

1.       Quantifying changes between standards (Ted)

·         Quantify lossyness of translation – usually “how does translation look” – good or bad

·         1st look at distribution of number elements in metadata – measure how much content and concepts

·         Content = Ʃ(# occurences of an element/ total # of elements) x (1 if in crosswalk OR 0 if not in crosswalk)

·         Concept = Ʃ# of element x (1 if in crosswalk OR 0 if not in crosswalk)

·         For the FGDC example shown – only 43% was able to be translated

·   33% are non-standard content – added by ESRI and USGS

·   18% attributed for synchronization between repositories

·         Content is the # of occurrence or frequency

·         Concept = each element

·         ECHO example (in excel) – count è content

·   Look at what concepts are important for a “NASA extension” for ISO

·         Steve – the landscape of these standards have been changing – what you need in metadata has changed – not sure how to “future proof” a standard

·         When an element doesn’t fit (or work in the crosswalk) – then look at what is actually in the field (content) not just the name

·         Ed – would eventually like to develop these into tool for repositories to quantify lossyness

2.       August action items

  1. Aleksandar will email the CF Satallite list with the terms and a link to the wiki page
    • Was submitted after September telecom. – will finalize the submission if there are no comments by this Friday
    • (Ed) – had some comments about central wavelength/wave number, but he was unable to answer

·   Aleksander answer them – saying what they wanted was too detailed for a standard names

  • Some of the feedback was helpful, but often too detailed and very specific
  1. Ted will add a paragraph on the wiki about the sensor-instrument and channel-band issue
  2. Ted will work on it (still an action item)
  3. Aleksander questioned if we still needed to do this…
  4. Eventually decided that Ted would add the note to the top and the bottom of the page would be set up for new proposals
  5. Not going to happen anytime soon
  6. Aleksandar will add the sensorML definitions for sensor, instrument, channel, and band
  7. Kelly will add a section explaining the 10 different dialects including web links and xml links

·         Has been started on the wiki (Metadata Dialects)

·         Kelly will finish today

·         Need to change netCDF to ACDD (attribute convetions for data discovery)

·         JOE à (from the National Center for Atmosphere Research – representing the remote sensing group) – they are using net CDF with CF radial

·   ACTION – Joe will write a wiki page for CF radial and include a small section on the Metadata Dialects page

3.       Session at January ESIP meeting

·         This meeting conflicts with the AMS meeting

·         Before the January meeting there is 1) NASA ESPS, 2) ISO metadata seminar, 3) ISO meeting in Saudia Arabia

·         Meeting sessions

1.       Satellite standard names (entitled ‘CF unleashed’)

a.       CF outside the ridge data world

b.      3 presentations??

                                                                                                                                       i.      Satellite by Ed/Aleksandar

                                                                                                                                     ii.      CF radial

                                                                                                                                    iii.      Instrument… (Ken Cassy NODC)

2.       Informative session on ISO 19115-1 (entitled ‘ISO unleashed’)

a.       ISO target for NOAA and NASA

·   ACTION – send this to list for other ideas

4.       Extra item

·         NetCDF Attribute Convention for Data Discovery's page on the NOAA GEO-IDE wiki with the newly adopted attribute geospatial_bounds. Also updated is the description of the four geospatial_lat|lon_min|max attributes.
