The Air Quality CoP and the Implementation of CyAir

Abstract/Agenda: 

An interoperable cyberinfrastructure that supports the air quality science and management communities continues to grow and evolve through a variety of somewhat independent projects.  The purpose of this session is to bring together the air quality community of practice, to which the ESIP Air Quality Working Group contributes, to share information about the projects that are contributing to this evolution.  In particular, the discussion will focus on progress in implementing the CyAir Project's Best Practices for Interoperability for the Air Quality Community, released in 2012. 

The session will include presentations about recent projects contributing to the cyberinfrastructure and an open discussion of needs and opportunities for future progress.

-Seek to provide quick and easy to use list of AC data available across the community
-Allow different user groups to ID datasets they need

Contextual information:
-Filtered and aggregated info about remotely sensed atmospheric chemistry and aerosol data
--Journal articles, RSS feeds, Social Media, Wikis, Science Team Reference Documents, Standard Metadata Records

Search and process journal articles and include as part of contextual metadata using a text analysis tool. Text analysis tool used to ID relevant journal articles that made use of particular datasets and understand how the journal authors used the dataset.

Jim Szykman from National Exposure Research Lab: Development of US EPA Remote Sensing Gateway (RSIG) 3-D Application

Background of RSIG
-Grew from efforts to explore ways to provide greater access to NASA and NOAA satellite data and EPA modeled data for EPA applied research
-Result: operational web based system for on-demand access

Responsible for Clouds, Aerosols and Tropospheric Chemistry data storage

Problems for doing data collection:
-In-situ calibration to instruments by PIs or scientists requires reprocessing and editing
-PIs name same parameter different things on different instruments
-Timescale merging (multiple instruments using different time steps)

Data management system for airborne observations where instruments are often tested
-Won't override, but rather supplement PIs naming of variables but seek to create synonyms (e.g. Ozone vs O3, same thing, different name)
-Converting legacy data to an 'idealized format'

-Stefan: We have been lacking a motivator. Happy that Terry and Rudy are stepping up.

Terry: "We are not 'chairs' but 'conveners'"

Terry: How do we make decisions? Money/funding speaks very loudly.
-Proposed that conveners bring people together on a semi regular basis as a steering group for a Meeting of Opportunity and that those who show up are voices on a 'steering committee'.  

Terry: Secretariat: Can we get help in organizational, logistical tasks? ESIP (Erin) has offered to help in the past but does she still have the time to contribute? Others to provide support?

Terry: Web Home? Where? Set this up through ESIP? We have info about community scattered across several platforms across ESIP (Wiki, commons, etc). How can we restructure this more simply? Provide people an easy way to enter and participate in the community.

Stefan: Talk with Erin and Carol to explore ESIP resources. Drupal sites... ESIP can help setup but we (community) would need to maintain it.

Terry: is there dedicated funding for meetings of communities of practice? Are there other meetings that the communities of practice can be present at? Suggestions for other methods of communications?

Terry: Update and active listserv. Cost?
Ethan: No. GovDelivery site can be used for free by EPA folks.
Terry: Maybe use ESIP for listserv?

Tom: Project management software such as BaseCamp. Content management and project management tool for distributed teams.

Hi Terry Session idea sounds good to me - we would like to highlight the new AirNow API and discuss success of establishing linkage between AQS and AirNow. Main concern is travel...or if there would be a registration fee for us attending remotely (not sure there is one or not). OAQPS would not fund me (or Phil) to attend just one day at the summer meeting.
