IT&I Rants/Rave: What's metadata for? Three examples of metadata used in a non-traditional way

Abstract/Agenda:

I will present three applications that use ISO metadata in ways that fall outside of the typical discover and describe use case. The Geo Data Portal, implements the typical discover and describe use case, but goes on to use service metadata formalisms to allow generalized machine to machine data integration. The Downscaled Climate Data Derivative Portal uses a set of ISO metadata records to manage all the data artifacts and tool tips in the application. The National Water Census Hydrologic Model Intercomparison Portal uses ISO metadata to track multiple versions of a modeling group's hydrologic model runs and links those runs to related post processing information. This presentation will be a mix of fast paced demonstration and explanation of the system architecture.
