Data Extraction Simplified through AppEEARS

Abstract:

The typical workflow for extracting data for point locations from satellite remote sensing datasets can be arduous, time consuming, and subject to errors. NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) has developed the Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AppEEARS); a web application that simplifies the extraction workflow and delivers highly-reduced analysis ready datasets in a matter of minutes or hours, instead of days or weeks. To request data for point locations through AppEEARS, users simply enter their point location(s) of interest into the sample extraction form, specify their desired Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) science dataset(s), and select the date range for which they would like to extract data for. AppEEARS returns a dataset containing the pixel values and associated quality information for each location, which can be downloaded and/or explored using built-in interactive visualizations. This poster will demonstrate the utility of AppEEARS from the user’s standpoint by comparing a typical workflow against an AppEEARS request for extracting time series vegetation indices data for locations of interest.
