This poster details how the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Community for Data Integration (CDI) Data Management Working Group developed a Science Data Lifecycle Model, and the role the model plays in shaping bureau-wide data management policies. The effort started with an extensive literature search on existing models, followed by working group discussions and a two-day, face-to-face meeting where the basic elements of the USGS model were agreed upon. The final Science Data Lifecycle Model was documented in a formal bureau publication. The USGS model’s concepts and structure form the basis of the USGS’s public website devoted to data management (www.usgs.gov/datamanagement). Screenshots of the website illustrate the depth to which the model was incorporated into the primary USGS data management resource. The poster will illustrate how the model helped the USGS address the Office of Science and Technology Policy for increased public access to federally funded research directive, and the Office of Management and Budget 2013 Open Data directive by becoming the foundation for a series of bureau policies related to data management planning, metadata development, data release procedures, and the long-term preservation of data. Beyond describing the USGS model’s origins, components, and the key role it played in the new agency policies, the poster will share use cases that illustrate applications of the model in the USGS research and data management process.
