Connecting Communities to Data in the Great Lakes Region

Abstract:

The Cooperative Institute of Meteorological Satellite Studies (CIMSS) used NOAA NWS data and findings from the 2014 National Climate Assessment (NCA) and the 2013 IPCC report (AR5) to developed a 4-week MOOC (Massive Open On-line Course) on the Changing Weather and Climate in the Great Lakes Region which debuted February 23, 2015.  Featuring a different season each week, this Great Lakes MOOC includes lectures about seasonal weather conditions, observed changes, and societal impacts of regional climate change, as well as actions with co-benefits to slow future climate change. Along with on-line forum discussions hosted on the Coursera platform, 21 discussion groups were held at libraries around Wisconsin each week during the month of March.  To date, over 7000 people have enrolled. The course will remain open and accessible on Coursera through the February 2016 at https://www.coursera.org/course/greatlakesclimate. This poster will highlight data featured in the course, community outreach strategies and initial survey results.
